If you’re an ACC-certified coach approaching renewal, you might already know that you need 10 hours of mentor coaching to renew your credential through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Those 10 hours must include at least three one-on-one sessions and the rest can be in a group format.
But here’s what many what you might not know. Mentor coaching is not just checking the box to reach your requirement. Mentor coaching is one of the most powerful professional development experiences you can have as a coach.
Why Mentor Coaching is So Transformational
When you first earned your ACC, you were beginning your coaching journey. As you continue to coach, you start refining how you coach and how to get out of your own way. When you are mentored, you gain insights into a number of areas, some of which are:
How your coaching style aligns to the ICF Core Competencies
Where you have blind spots
How to strengthen your coaching presence and listening
What you are doing well and gain some confidence in your approach
Actionable feedback on your questions and flow
Even experienced coaches are often surprised by what they uncover when their sessions are reviewed through the lens of a certified mentor coach.
Why Group Mentor Coaching Is Powerful
One of the hidden gifts of group mentor coaching is that you don’t just learn from your own coaching style and flow, you learn from other coaches. When you are with a group of other coaches, you start to experience the diversity in perspectives, questions and approaches that can only come with group mentoring.
When you hear how other coaches:
Frame powerful questions
Navigate client emotion
Stay grounded in silence
Work through contracting
Hold back advice
You expand your range, sharpen your active listening, and begin to hear subtleties in coaching that you may have missed before. There is something uniquely powerful about growing in community with other coaches who are equally committed to excellence and it's beautiful to be a part of and experience.
Mentor Coaching Is About Who You’re Becoming
Yes, you might need to meet a mentor coaching or CCEs requirement in order to meet your ACC or PCC requirement. But mentor coaching is about more than meeting the requirements, it's about who you are becoming as a coach. In coaching, you are not watched for compliance when you are off in-session. The only one checking your alignment to the competencies is yourself. And the only one who is in charge of developing you, is you!
Ask yourself if you are coaching to the depth for which you are capable? Are you fully partnering with your clients and leaving enough space for your clients to sit in silence so they can truly come up with their own way forward? Are you getting out of your own way and letting go?
Mentor coaching sharpens all of this.
